Is There A Correlation Between Childhood Obesity And Bad Grades

When we consider what is known about the relationship between a nutritional health diet and different fats, it makes sense that there could be a correlation between childhood obesity and bad grades.

When developing children are eating so much of the bad omega-6 fats that it leads to the excess fat storage and weight gain that would cause obesity, it is at the expense of a possible omega-3 fatty acid deficiency and getting enough of the omega-3 dha fatty acids that is needed for brain development and cognitive skills.

Even from the time of pregnancy, studies have shown omega-3 fatty acid benefits for pregnant woman and their infants, where there is increased development of the development of the brain and cognition when the pregnant mother had increased levels of omega-3 dha when the baby was delivered.

Besides the nutritional health problems affecting physical health, there are also social development and acceptance problems that can come from being fat and excessively overweight.  And when this occurs, it would likely lead to children feel badly about themselves, along with having fewer or no friends.  The result would then be not caring or trying in school, which would result in having lower grades.

There is a research study where 6,250 children were followed as they went from kindergarten through fifth grade, and it was seen that on average, obese children got lower scores in math tests than the non-obese children did.

As reported in the Journal of Child Development, if children began kindergarten with weight problems, then their lower performance in math began in first grade and continued through fifth.

Sara Gable from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she is an associate professor of nutrition and exercise physiology and leading the study, says:

“Our study suggests that childhood obesity, especially obesity that persists throughout the elementary grades, can harm children’s social and emotional well-being and academic performance.”

Possibly having lower grades is just one of the impacts from childhood obesity – it is definitely correlated with numerous long-term nutritional health problems leading to many different illnesses and diseases that can be either physical or social.

If you are overweight or obese as an adult, you know what it has done to your overall health and how hard it is to make the necessary lifestyle changes and commitments to lose weight and start exercising to become physically fit – certainly it is the parent’s responsibility to help prevent this from becoming a problem for their children.

And based on all the nutritional health benefits that omega-3 dha can have lowering inflammation, weight control and loss, and brain development, taking a high quality omega-3 nutritional supplement is something that is highly recommended by health and nutrition professionals.
